Amid conflicts, Senator calls for peace on Earth

While the cause of world peace, when left up to politicians, may seem like an unlikely goal at times, some lawmakers still consider ending conflict to be among their top priorities and are willing to fight to make it a reality.

For example, U.S. Senator Denis Kucinich of Ohio recently attended a peace rally in his home state and reiterated his support for ending the violent conflicts in which the U.S. is engaged around the world, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

He told the crowd that they should not be taken in by the rhetoric of other public figures, which is often intended to inspire fear, thus clearing the path for further conflict. Furthermore, he said that the money used to fund these wars would be better spent on social programs at home that build stronger communities and encourage a more peaceful existence.

The comments echo the thoughts of Ilchi Lee, who has advocated for years for the world to work toward peace on Earth. The comments from the Senator suggest that Lee is not alone in this push.

Middle East unrest threatens fragile peace

With all of the pro-democracy protests happening in the Middle East, many people believe that residents of the region will soon benefit from greater freedom and control over their own lives. However, others have worried that the paradigm may nullify preexisting treaties and threaten the pursuit of world peace.

In particular, the Huffington Post reports that the overthrow of the Egyptian government could jeopardize a peace treaty that the nation long held with Israel. Representing two of the most powerful nations in the region, this treaty was considered a bedrock of any hopes of future peace efforts.

Furthermore, instability in many of the surrounding countries could bring even more unrest, endangering fragile accords between several nations that may not have had the best relations in the past.

All of this simply goes to show that Ilchi Lee may have a valid point when he talks about peace. He says that peace on Earth will never be achieved until individuals identify themselves first as an Earth Citizen, rather than claiming any nationality. This could reduce tensions across the globe and bring an end to tensions.

While much of the work done by governments is aimed at improving the security and prosperity of their citizens, everyone once and a while they hit on idea that inspires the world to live more peacefully and harmoniously. The U.S. was recently reminded of this, as the Peace Corps marked its 50th anniversary.

President John F. Kennedy signed a bill on March 1, 1961signed a bill that created the Peace Corps. Since that time, hundreds of thousands of volunteers have worked in all corners of the globe in an effort to bring relief to struggling populations.

"On this anniversary, we honor the men and women from across the country who have carried forward our Nation's finest tradition of service, and we rededicate ourselves to fulfilling the dream and continuing the work of all those who aspire and yearn for peace," President Barack Obama said in a proclamation on the 50th anniversary of the Peace Corps.

This is the type of effort that Ilchi Lee says will make a difference in the world's pursuit of peace. When individuals leave behind their national identities to help those from other cultures, they begin living as true Earth Citizens who have compassion for all their fellow humans.

Israeli peace plan could bring mixed results

The international pursuit of world peace may soon take a large, but mostly temporary, step forward. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently announced that he has proposed a new peace plan that would put an end to fighting in the region and pave the way for an independent Palestinian state.

The plan calls for Israelis living in the West Bank to be resettled and their buildings to be demolished. The two states would later discuss matters of final boarders and the matter of who controls Jerusalem.

While the move could bring a quick cessation of tensions in a part of the world that has been responsible for more than its share of violence, it may still fall short of the overall goal of achieving world peace. Ilchi Lee says that it is only by erasing borders, not drawing new ones, that the world will be at peace.

He believes that the only way to put an end to violence is for everyone in the world to identify as a citizen of the Earth first, before nationality or religion. While the peace plan may put a stop to immediate violence and killing, it is likely to have little impact on the world's larger pursuit of peace.

With the passing of Frank Buckles, the last living American World War I veteran, comes a reminder of how far away the nations of planet Earth are from achieving the world peace that at one point seemed much more possible.

In his last remaining years, Buckles came to symbolize the First World War, which was predicted would be the "war to end all wars," according to the New York Times. Because of the brutality of the fighting and the finality of its outcome, commentators of the day said that no nation would ever again look to engage in activities that would bring about the cost and destruction of modern warfare.

However, today it seems that this sentiment is largely forgotten. With revolutions raging throughout the Middle East, the U.S. embroiled in two conflicts and tensions being ratcheted up in many other corners of the globe, fighting seems almost inevitable.

While the prospect of world peace may seem dim at the present moment, it is not. Ilchi Lee believes that achieving peace throughout the globe is entirely possible. It will take work and dedication to the cause of living as one race and with one national identity, but doing so could surely bring about an end to conflict.

I love how Ilchi Lee can bridge the personal to the grand. Here is a quote I found that demonstrates this a little.

A network with more connections than the number of atoms in the whole universe; the infinite potential latent within that network of connections; the brain’s structural properties that make possible deep thinking and analysis, synthesis, and, more than anything else, choice — what do you think all these exist for? They are far too precious to be used only in these ways. Let’s allow our brains to pursue significant, far-reaching dreams and goals, that befit their greatness.

The most effective way to awaken the sleeping brain is to engage it in a workload that must require its full awareness and attention. Establish a big goal requiring absolutely all of your energy, abilities, and wisdom. Set up a goal that will enable you to overcome your current limitations and empower you to take great leaps forward. If you create a goal that you can achieve easily, one within the scope of your limitations, then your brain will use less than 100% of its capacity. If, however, you pursue a grand, far-reaching vision, your brain will train itself accordingly and work hard to meet your expectations.
