Conference helps young people see the importance of peace

Many young people go into the summer months thinking of nothing more than relaxing, having fun and sleeping in. However, one group of high school students from Connecticut recently had more weighty issues on their minds.

World peace was the topic of the day at the World Youth Peace Summit, which was recently held in West Hartford, Connecticut, according to the East Haddam Patch. The event was organized by the Institute for International Sport and sought to inspire more young people to work to attain peace on Earth within their lifetimes.

After a day of athletic competition, aspiring athletes and artists listened to lectures and participated in workshops that all carried a message of how youths can use their talents to promote peace in their communities and around the world.

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell addressed the attendees on what a pursuit of peace can mean, according to the news source. Other international figures, including delegates from the United Nations, spoke as well.

This is the type of activity that author and philosopher Ilchi Lee says could one day lead to world peace. By getting young people from various racial, religious and national backgrounds together, he believes that they will see more of their commonalities than their differences.
